The Mahadera project: a legacy of empowerment
GENESIS AND CONTINUITY
Launched in 2016 by Authentic Products, a leading actor of Vanilla in Madagascar, and DSM-Firmenich, under the co-leadership of Nissaba founder, the Mahadera School is a beacon of innovation in the SAVA region of Madagascar, home to the world's vanilla industry.
Mahadera's three-year programme (two residential years followed by on-the-job training) trains young farmers in modern agricultural practices, ensuring resilience in a volatile market.
This school inspired the creation of Nissaba and now the brand has extended his support to the school graduates by providing them with specific grants to help them establish themselves as entrepreneurs in their own family farm.
ENTREPRENEURSHIP OVER CHARITY
Students embrace entrepreneurship and agroforestry, transforming the role of vanilla farming in Madagascar. A cornerstone of the program is crop diversification, designed to provide alternative revenue streams when vanilla prices are low. Graduates plant cash crops like cloves, pink peppercorns, and coffee, as well as food crops such as citrus fruits. Future expansions include high-demand crops like cocoa and coconut.
A family-centered approach to farming
FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
The Mahadera project deeply involves entire families in the transformation of their farms. Parents, children, and extended relatives collaborate on agroforestry plots, motivated by the tangible benefits of diversification. Many parents now recognize agroforestry as a way to enhance the value of their land while securing additional income streams.
GENERATIONAL IMPACT
This approach not only strengthens economic stability but also reduces families’ dependence on the volatile vanilla market. Families collectively embrace farming as a sustainable, entrepreneurial venture, with younger generations leading the charge. Students are inspired by the success of their peers, and they see firsthand the financial security offered by diversified farming.
CUSTOMIZED SUPPORT
Every agroforestry plot is tailored to individual family needs, with a dedicated agricultural advisor visiting regularly to provide guidance, assess progress, and ensure crop success. This personalized approach results in an 80% survival ratefor planted trees, reflecting the program's success.

Transforming lives, landscapes, and the future
CHANGING THE MINDS ABOUT AGRICULTURE
The Mahadera project ensures that families are less vulnerable to the highs and lows of the vanilla market by introducing alternative crops with staggered harvest timelines. Cloves and pink peppercorns provide shorter-term yields, while coffee and other crops secure long-term sustainability. Through this innovative approach, Mahadera is reshaping how communities view agriculture, not just as a means of survival but as a dynamic, entrepreneurial opportunity. With Nissaba's continued support, the project is a shining example of how luxury can drive positive change by bridging craftsmanship and impact.
